Gingham Embroidery: Stitches - Needle Weaving



Needle Weaving is one the decorative or fancy stitches used in gingham embroidery. Needle weaving does not weaken the fabric rather strengthens it as the fabric is very rarely picked during the weaving.

Here is a pictorial representation of this beautiful stitch.

Gingham Embroidery : Ribbon Lace Stitch




1. Ribbon Lace Stitch

Bring the needle out at 1 
take the needle under the fabric at 2 and bring out at 3
Take the needle under the inner leg of the double cross stitch at 4 
Continue weaving at 5 and 6





Pass the needle as shown below to make a lace.




At the end of the row take the needle unde the fabric at A in order to make a cross stitch.


Make a cross stitch and continue weaving.

Here is the ribbon lace stitch.


2. Continuous Ribbon Lace Stitch

Bring the needle out at A and weave clockwise as indicated (with arrows) below.
Once you reach complete one round and reach A make a cross stitch.








Then Weave anti clockwise.
Most important: Check how the corners are worked

Gingham Embroidery: Stitches -III (Woven Oval Stitch)

 

 

Woven Oval Stitch and Variations

Instructions

Woven Oval Stitch

1. Cross stitches in the same color cells are made as shown below.



2. Bring the needle up at one of the legs of the cross stitch and weave ovals under the legs diagonally opposite to the first one, as shown below 



3. Repeat the weaving once again to get a thicker texture and finish off by taking the needle down at the same entry point.


4. Make ovals on all four sides to get the flower petal appearance.

 

Woven Oval Variation 1

This stitch uses double cross stitch instead of cross stitch to anchor the woven ovals in all 8 directions.   

 

 

Woven Oval Variation 2

 One oval is woven under the other one to form this.
You can weave once more for a better look as the one shown below.

Gingham Embroidery: Stitches -II (Woven Circle Variation)





Instructions


Bring up the needle at the point shown in the picture. Take the needle under the inner legs of other three stitches.

Continue to weave once more . Two rounds give the stitch a better and fuller look.
Pass the needle into the hole from where it was brought out.
The woven Circle is done.

Another Variation of woven circle is simple cross stitches.

Gingham Embroidery : A Simple Motif



This can be called as the simplest pattern of gingham embroidery.
Stitching with two colors give it a much better look. Another variation can be seen below.




It involves the three stitches namely,

Chicken Scratch/Gingham Embroidery: The Stitches -1

  1. Cross Stitch
  2. Double Cross Stitch (Smyrna Cross)

Cross Stitch




Double Cross Stitch (Smyrna Cross)

It is a variation of the cross stitch.
First a cross stitch is made and then continued as shown below.





Straight Stitch
 Straight stitch can be horizontal or vertical
 


Woven Circle Stitch

1. Start by making four straight stitches.
2. Get the needle up at a point as shown ( in  fig 2)
3. Take the needle under the remaining three stitches  ( as shown in fig. 3 and 4)
4. Go under the first stitch and the remaining stitches once more  ( as shown in 4, 5 and 6)
 


 7. Finish the woven circle stitch by going down at the same point where the needle was brought up.
8. Completed woven circle stitch.

We will make a pattern with these stitches in the next post
